When you own or manage a pub in Scotland, the weather is often the biggest challenge to making the most of your outdoor space.
Beer gardens can be one of the most valuable areas of a venue during the warmer months, but in reality, Scottish weather rarely sticks to the script. A sudden downpour can empty an outdoor seating area within minutes, leaving valuable space unused and customers heading home earlier than planned.
That was exactly the challenge facing Lynch's Bar on London Road in Glasgow's East End, just a stone's throw from the famous Barras Market.
The venue already had a generous outdoor area, but it was only being used on dry days. For much of the year, the space sat empty, limiting the number of customers the pub could accommodate and reducing potential food and drink sales.
The Challenge
Like many Scottish pubs and brewery-owned venues, Lynch's Bar had an outdoor space with huge potential.
The problem wasn't the size of the beer garden.
It was the Scottish climate.
When the weather changed, customers moved inside or left altogether. The result was an outdoor area that couldn't be relied upon and a missed opportunity to increase capacity throughout the year.
The aim was simple.
Create a comfortable outdoor space that customers would continue to use, whatever the weather.
The Solution
UrbanXScapes designed and installed a bespoke commercial pergola solution that transformed the existing beer garden into an all-weather hospitality space.
Rather than installing a single structure, four premium pergolas were seamlessly connected to create one large covered area, made up of two 3m x 3m pergolas and two 4m x 6m pergolas.
Every element was designed around the existing site and the needs of the venue.
To ensure a secure installation without disturbing the artificial grass, concrete pads were installed beneath the front posts.
At the rear, each post was individually cut to suit the sloping ground levels, creating a clean and level finish across the entire structure.
Six integrated privacy screens now provide shelter from wind while concealing the rear boundary, creating a much more welcoming environment for customers.
Integrated LED lighting means the space remains inviting into the evening, while the built-in drainage system manages rainwater efficiently, helping the beer garden remain open even during typical Scottish weather.
The installation was completed with a lead time of just three days.
The Result
The transformation has completely changed how the outdoor space is used.
Instead of relying on the weather forecast, Lynch's Bar now has an outdoor area that can be enjoyed throughout much more of the year.
The additional seating has created capacity for around 100 extra customers, allowing the venue to welcome more guests during busy periods while encouraging customers to stay longer, even when the weather changes.
For pubs, breweries and hospitality groups, that doesn't just improve the customer experience. It creates an opportunity to generate additional revenue from a space that was previously underused.
Why More Scottish Pubs Are Investing in Commercial Pergolas
Across Scotland, breweries and pub operators are looking for ways to make their outdoor spaces work harder.
A commercial pergola offers much more than shelter from the rain.
It creates flexible outdoor seating, extends the trading season, improves customer comfort and allows venues to make use of valuable external space throughout the year.
Whether it's an independent pub, a brewery estate, a hotel terrace or a hospitality group with multiple sites, investing in an all-weather outdoor space can make a significant difference to both customer experience and business performance.
